Silver and 24K gold, 3” x 3” x 3.75”
This piece is inspired by work of an artist whose name has been lost to history and is known as “The Master of the Black Field.” The cedar bentwood box with his painted design was collected in 1880 at Chilkat, Alaska and is in the collection of the American Museum of Natural History in New York, NY. Haida master artist, Bill Reid, studied this box extensively and did his own silver hand engraved box, entitled “The Final Exam”, due to the complexity and sophistication of the design.
