Charles Edenshaw was born in 1839 and is from the Stastas Eagle Clan of Skidegate, Haida Gwaii. He was a carver and a hand engraver, and is one of the most influential artists of his time.

This piece incorporates hand engraving with a coin from the Indian Heritage Series of commemorative coins, which featured First Nations people of historical importance.

In the ancient stories the Loon takes the hero under the sea, or under a mystic mountain to other realms. The Loon symbolizes a doorway or a new stage or period of life.
