Chief Mungo Martin was born in 1881 at Fort Rupert, BC. He as taught to be a carver by his step father, master carver Charlie James. Chief Martin carved numerous totem poles and helped to raise the appreciation of First Nations art and culture in British Columbia.

This piece incorporates hand engraving with a coin from the Indian Heritage Series of commemorative coins, which featured First Nations people of historical importance.

 The THUNDERBIRD is the most powerful of all mythical creatures, and symbolizes personal power and a link to the spirit world.
